As Minister for Corrections and Rehabilitation, I am continuing with our strong focus on Correctional Officer recruitment, as part of our Government’s ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of staff, inmates and the community.
In a big week for the Tasmania Prison Service (TPS), the third recruit school for the year celebrates their graduation today, while the fourth recruit school for 2022 began on Monday.
The 11 recruits graduating today will immediately commence their posts at TPS facilities across the State, including Launceston and Hobart Reception Prisons, the Burnie Courts, Mary Hutchison Women’s Prison and the Risdon Prison Complex.
Additionally, the commencement of the fourth recruit school means the TPS has reached a record number of recruit schools in a calendar year, with training for 14 new recruits now underway.
The five female and nine male recruits come to their new careers from diverse backgrounds, including people with experience in policing, disability services, security, military, bus driving, plumbing and shearing.
Work is already underway to select the next group of recruits who will begin their training in early 2023, and applications remain open for future recruit schools.
Congratulations to both the incoming recruits and those who will graduate this week, and I wish them well as they embark on their new career with the TPS.
